MARATEA - Basilicata - Campania (Southern Italy)
Having searched Italy for a new and exciting
dive destination that also suits non diving partners and family - I finally
found perfection in Maratea. 2½ hours south of Naples, the coast from Praia a Mare in Calabria, through the coast of Basilicata to Camerota & Palinuro in Campania has everything - limestone caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites, only reachable via underwater caves - wrecks deep and moderate - bottomless walls and blue holes - coral - fish - all waiting for you to explore. I will be working with local dive operators, hotels and villa rental agencies to put together packages for divers and non-divers with excursions to the cave dwellings of Matera, the stunning Grotte dell'Angelo (with easy and technical speleological tours and courses). Accommodation will range from our base in Maratea, charming apartments in the old town, spacious villas in the harbour and 5 star designer hotels in a historic palazzo (Hotel Santavenere) on a dramatic headland or an ancient convent in the Centro Storico (Hotel La Locanda delle Donne Monachi). We will also be running dive cruises in a 15 berth, 7 cabin luxury live aboard. There are several dive centres on the beach at Praia a Mare just south of Maratea. All are right next to Dino Island.
In addition to our house that has been available to rent from the 2005 season, we have a carefully selected range of villas and village apartments in Maratea and Fiumicello. Want to buy a house in Maratea? Having been there and done it, we can assist you every step of the way. Visit Italiandreams for information on villa rental and Italian House Purchase. For real luxury, we can offer stunning 5 star designer hotels such as a historic palazzo (Hotel Santavenere) on a dramatic headland or an ancient convent in the Centro Storico (Hotel La Locanda delle Donne Monachi). Also - based on the coast near Rome, Lobster Dive Centre - a fantastic bunch of guys. Especially Luca and Rowena. You will be in safe hands with them. Why not also dive the Milford Haven off Genova - a 340 metre supertanker in 85 metres? For the divers, click on the thumbnails below to view the charts of the local waters. There are over 500 caves and caverns, wrecks, walls, corals and abundant fish life.
And if the sea conditions mean that diving can't take place or for non-diving family and friends we can also offer :-
CAVING
Basilicata and Campania have a host of amazing cave
systems. Le Grotte Di Pertosa o Dell'Angelo is a classic cave. There are 2
routes. Entering by boats pulled into the cave by hand using cables, the tourist
route is paved and easy. The 90 minute tour takes you 1.5Km inside the mountain
to the cathedral sized main chamber via the stunning waterfall. The stalactites
and stalagmites are truly breathtaking. The list of caves in the region is endless and there are several speleological groups and clubs that can be booked to meet all levels of experience.
